The current lineup consists of Scott Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello, vocalist Joey Belladonna and lead guitarist Jonathan Donais. Over the course of their career, the lineup has changed multiple times, with Ian remaining the only constant member. Ian and Benante are the only members to appear on all of Anthrax's albums, while Bello has been a member since 1984, replacing Lilker. Anthrax released their debut album "Fistful of Metal" in 1984 with singer Neil Turbin, who was replaced by Joey Belladonna later that year. Anthrax was formed in Queens, New York City, on July 18, 1981, by Scott Ian and Dan Lilker with Dave Weiss on drums. The band's name was inspired by the disease anthrax, which Ian encountered in a biology textbook. The initial lineup included singer John Connelly and bassist Paul Kahn. Dan Nelson joined as vocalist in 2007, with Caggiano returning as lead guitarist, but Nelson left in 2009. Belladonna returned in 2010, coinciding with the band's participation in several "Big Four" concerts. "Worship Music" (2011) debuted at number twelve on the Billboard 200. Rob Caggiano left in 2013 and was replaced by Jonathan Donais. The "Anthems" EP was released in 2013, and the live DVD "Chile on Hell" in 2014. The band continued to tour and record new material, including the release of "For All Kings" in 2016, which reached number nine on the Billboard 200. They have been nominated for Grammy Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Anthrax continued to tour extensively, including co-headlining with bands such as Kreator, Testament, and Slayer. They participated in the "70,000 Tons of Metal" cruise in 2017 and had tracks featured in media, including a version of "Antisocial" in the film "It" (2017). A live album, "XL", was released in 2022 from a livestream performance. The band has planned their twelfth studio album with recording beginning in 2023, and it is scheduled for release in May 2026.
